Atletico Madrid loan out-of-favour midfielder Gelson Martins to struggling Monaco for rest of season
- Gelson Martins has not played for Atletico Madrid at all so far in 2019
- Portuguese player joined La Liga club in the summer, signing as a free agent
- Diego Simeone’s side have allowed him to join struggling Monaco in Ligue 1
Martins, 23, made only one league appearance for Diego Simeone’s side since joining as a free agent from Sporting last July.
He has not featured for the Spanish club in any competition so far in 2019.
Atletico Madrid have allowed Gelson Martins to leave the club on loan to Monaco
The Portugal international joins a Monaco side who are fighting against relegation from Ligue 1.
They are currently second bottom in the standings and three points from safety after losing 2-0 to Dijon on Saturday.
The principality club sacked Thierry Henry as coach last week, replacing him with Leonardo Jardim.

Martins signed as a free agent last summer but has not featured for Atletico in 2019
Jardim led them to the 2016-17 league title and semi-finals of the Champions League but was dismissed earlier this season.
Monaco’s next game is a Coupe de la Ligue semi-final against Guingamp this Tuesday.
Atletico are expected to confirm a loan deal for Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata, who passed a medical in the Spanish capital earlier on Sunday.
